Everyday Makeup Routine | WINTER

I will admit, makeup is not my forte and I don’t normally make a drastic effort with my makeup, however, I do try to make myself look somewhat presentable on an everyday basis – if I was going out somewhere this would be a totally different story. I definitely do not do anything the right way or in the right order but it works for me. Most of the products I use are drugstore and are inexpensive, however, there are a few products that were a bit more pricey – all of the products mentioned are linked.

(p.s to warn you in advance, this post is VERY LONG)

I always make sure I wash my face before doing ANYTHING. I’ve always had stubborn skin. I have tried most things to improve my skin and it just hasn’t really worked so, recently, I have been using Proactiv+ to see if its worth the hype. I use the 3-Step Core System, which includes an exfoliating cleanser, a pore treatment and a moisturiser. This routine has definitely improved my skin, even if I still get an odd breakout here and there – it makes your skin look and feel a lot more refreshed and a lot brighter, which is a real plus when you don’t want to wear as much makeup. Within this routine, after cleansing my face, I like to use an eye cream – I use the Polaar IcyMagic Instant Eye Contour Energiser. I got this as a sample in a Birchbox and have been loving it ever since. Although the Proactiv+ set comes with a moisturiser, I make sure to also use a separate moisturiser as my skin, especially in the winter, gets quite dry. More recently, I’ve been using the Nip+Fab Kale Fix Moisturiser. This is quite a thick moisturiser, though it doesn’t feel it, and it definitely makes my skin look and feel much more hydrated throughout the day.

After applying moisturiser and letting it sink into my skin, I like to use a base to start out my makeup. Now, I know some people swear by primer but, personally, I don’t, so I just go straight into my makeup. On a daily basis, I don’t normally want my makeup to feel heavy on my face, which is why I like to use the bareMinerals Complexion Rescue (I’m pale so I use the shade Opal). This tinted hydrating gel cream is perfect for a low coverage everyday look. I’ve really been enjoying using this as it is very lightweight and the consistency is easy to blend.

After the foundation/base, I like to use concealer under my eyes and over any blemishes left on my face. I use two concealers for this to make sure it all blends into my base well. The first is a concealer that I have been using for a good seven or eight years (obviously I’ve repurchased it, though finding my shade in Boots has been a struggle recently), and was the first concealer I used properly for makeup – this is the Seventeen Stay Time Liquid Concealer in the shade Fair. Usually I use this concealer to blend out into my foundation as it is slightly darker than my other one. I have used this product religiously as I love its consistency and coverage. The concealer I use to highlight and generally conceal my eyes and blemishes is the Revlon Colorstay Liquid Concealer in the shade 01 Fair. This is slightly lighter than the Seventeen one, which means it is perfect for highlighting and covering minor blemishes.

After finishing applying my foundation and concealer, I use powder. I have used the Rimmel Stay Matte Pressed Powder in the shade 001 Translucent for seven or eight years now and I have not strayed from it – I even went searching for it in America when the lid of the one I had been using cracked. I have repurchased it too many times to count and will be repurchasing it again when mine runs out. Using the Multi-Task Brush from RealTechniques, I put powder all over my face – with a focus under my eyes and on any other oily places.

I don’t really like to use contour or bronzer so after powder, I highlight my face. Recently, I have been loving using the Benefit Dandelion Twinkle Strobing and Highlighting Powder. This gives a really subtle glow to my face after using powder, which I really like for an everyday look. I use this on my cheekbones, along my nose and above my lips. I have recently been using a Spectrum A05 brush to do this.

Before any other makeup, I do my eyebrows. Recently, I have started using the Benefit Goof Proof Brow Pencil in the shade 3 and Gimme Brow! gel in the shade 1. These two products, used alone or together, have made my brow routine so much quicker and simpler and I love the way they make my eyebrows look.

I love trying out different eyeshadow looks with different palettes, however, on a regular basis, I will either stick to a simple, plain look, or my go-to pinky/maroon look if I have more time. The palettes I use the most are the Urban Decay Naked 2 Palette and, a recently purchased, ABH Modern Renaissance Palette. My go-to colours in the Naked 2 Palette are Foxy (a base kind of colour) and Bootycall (a highlight colour), which I use for a more simpler look. In the Modern Renaissance Palette, I like to use Tempera (another base colour), Vermeer (a similar highlight colour), Buon Fresco (a mauve matte colour), Burnt Orange (a warm orange matte colour) and Venetian Red (a maroon matte colour) for a bolder look on my eyes. The brushes I use differ from the RealTechniques eyeshadow brushes and the brushes that come in the palettes.

After completing my eyeshadow, and highlighting my eyebrows and inner corners, I put on mascara. I recently bought the Too Faced Better Than Sex Waterproof Mascara, which I love but use mainly on going out or for somewhere where I know it needs to stay on. For an everyday look, I tend to use the L’oréal Volume Million Lashes Excess Mascara on my top lashes and the L’oréal Volume Million Lashes Fatale Mascara on my lower lashes. The reason being because the Excess mascara’s wand is too big for my lower lashes and the Fatale mascara has a smaller and more precise wand. I always find that mascara really pulls the look together and makes it look more complete than before.

Usually I wait until the end to put anything on my lips. At the beginning I will put on some kind of lip balm to make sure my lips aren’t cracked (as they normally are during the winter). I usually don’t do much on my lips, however, if I were going to I would most likely use a nude/pink lipstick that wouldn’t noticeably rub off throughout the day. My go-to lip products are pretty much all from NYX as I really like the consistency and staying power of their products. These products are; the Liquid Suede Cream Lipstick in the shade 04 Soft Spoken, the Lingerie Liquid Lipstick in the shade 02 Embellishment and the Soft Matte Lip Cream in the shade 32 Rome. These are all similar pink colours and are definitely the ones I tend to use on an everyday basis.

Once I’ve finished my makeup, I fix my hair and then I am ready to go. Obviously, this routine changes depending on how much time I have – for example, I might skip foundation or I might not put on mascara. Anyway, this is how I do my makeup, I hope you enjoyed reading it.
